Saying something is …
Saying something is ‘gay’ and meaning it sucks is really only lazy sarcasm. If I say, “well, this is awesome/fun/great/happy/joyous” in a sarcastic manner. What I’m indirectly saying is, “this really bites/sucks/etc.” Since ‘gay’ is a synonym for the first grouping of words, Tom isn’t a jerk for using a homophobic cliche; he’s just a jerk because he’s generally insulting and rude. (And stupid because he probably thinks that is a jab at homosexuals)
